SYNOPSIS
The musician Prince was known for his electric stage presence, extravagant fashion, controversial lyrics and his multi-instrumental, multi genre music he blended rock, new wave, soul, funk and pop. In addition, androgyny, fashion, sex appeal and mystery all helped Prince develop his persona. No artist who was more prolific and unique.
One of the best-selling music artists of all time, this film highlights some of Prince's most loved tracks including 1999, Kiss and Purple Rain breaking down their inception and impact on his career. He not only created hits for himself but was also a great collaborator writing defining songs for other artists including ‘Nothing Compares To You’ for Sinead O’Connor. The film looks at his inspiration, relationships and performances, the latter of which stunned the world.
Alongside Michael Jackson Prince became one of the first black artists to be played on MTV and continued to break down boundaries. In 1993 he rebelled against Warner Brothers changing his name to an unpronounceable symbol. He was then referred to as "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince" or simply "The Artist". This documentary explores all aspects of Prince through interviews with music journalists and Prince experts, discovering what creates and defines the man.
The film follows Prince from his early years growing up in Minneapolis to this final days when he died from an accidental drug overdose of Fentanyl. The film celebrates this life and looks at his lasting legacy.
